These Fruits at Walmart Were Just Recalled Due to Listeria Outbreak
A new recall of fresh produce items is affecting hundreds of Walmart locations in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Country Fresh, a packager of pre-cut fruit, issued a voluntary recall of cubed fresh watermelon on Oct. 1. The fruit, sold at Walmart stores and RaceTrac gas stations, may have been contaminated with Listeria, a bacteria that can cause a deadly infection in humans. The recall has since been expanded to include various containers of "Freshness Guaranteed" cut and sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples and cantaloupe distributed by Walmart, according to the latest announcement by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recalled watermelon containers have a best-by date of Oct. 4, while the other fruit containers in the expanded recall have a best-by date range from Oct. 3 to Oct. 11. For a detailed list of the recalled products, check out FDA's website.
Recalls were prompted by a discovery of Listeria monocytogenes on a piece of equipment in the fruit packager's facilities during a routine inspection. Walmart has since removed the affected products from their stores, and the FDA advises consumers to discard the fruit if they happen to have it at home.
So far, there have been no reported cases of illness resulting from this outbreak, according to the FDA.
This is the third listeria outbreak that has prompted product recalls at large retailers this year. Back in August, grocery store chain Wegmans issued a recall of oranges, lemons, and in-house products that contain them (like ready-to-eat seafood items), and Giant Food Stores recalled a house brand squash noodle medley shortly thereafter.
