Target Wants This Safety Policy It Makes You Follow to Become Law

The retail chain is asking states to help keep shopping environments safe amid coronavirus.

There is growing evidence that universal mask-wearing can literally save tens of thousands of lives, but like so many issues in today's hyper-partisan world, it has become a divisive political issue. National retail giant Target has joined forces with a number of other national chains in seeking state government mandates on mandatory in-store mask-wearing by all customers and staff members alike.

The idea is a simple one: If states mandate universal mask-wearing, then pressure is taken off of retail outlets for customers too stubborn to abide by the guidelines. The CDC recommends people cover their mouth and nose when around others in order to help reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association, which represents Target and Home Depot, among many other major chains, believes that lack of cohesive mask requirements around the country has not only created confusion but has also lead to conflict between customers and workers trying to enforce store rules. The National Governors Association responded on Tuesday that they are discussing the letter and others like it from different retail groups.

A recent study out of Virginia Commonwealth University reveals compelling evidence that those countries that quickly enacted widespread mask use had far lower death rates than those that didn't. Also, a Philadelphia Inquirer study found that states that recommend their residents wear masks but do not require it has seen new coronavirus cases rise by 84 percent over the last two weeks. By contrast, in 11 states that mandate wearing masks in public, new cases have fallen by 25 percent over the last two weeks.

And yet, for reasons that aren't entirely clear, there is a stubborn set of citizens who refuse to wear a mask and see store regulations as a personal threat to their personal liberty. As such, a myriad of viral videos has recently emerged showing grocery store conflicts between shoppers an store associates eager to have customers wear masks as a public safety issue.
