7 States Face New COVID Surge
Of all the data points that matter when tracking the coronavirus—7.5 million coronavirus cases so far, 211,000 fatalities reported in the United States, America is averaging more than 44,000 new Covid-19 cases daily, according to Johns Hopkins University—one stands out: hospitalizations. When you see a rise in those, it's a warning sign. "We just have to assume the monster is everywhere," said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. Here are the states seeing record-high hospitalization in recent days. Read on, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.
Hospitals are overrun in this swing state, with only 16% of beds available. "We hoped this day wouldn't come, but unfortunately, Wisconsin is in a much different, more dire place today and our healthcare systems are beginning to become overwhelmed by the surge of COVID-19 cases," Democratic Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement, about the opening of a field hospital to help with an overrun of patients. "This alternative care facility will take some of the pressure off our healthcare facilities while expanding the continuum of care for folks who have COVID-19."
Hospitalizations have increased regularly over the last two weeks. "This emergency will end, and it is a matter of months," Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said. "But we are not out of the woods yet. Right now, the federal government and all 50 states have been under some form of state of emergency. We must continue doing our part to fight this virus on behalf of our families, frontline workers, and our small businesses."
"New numbers show increasing cause for concern about the coronavirus pandemic's fall outlook as rates of new COVID-19 cases have trended upward locally and statewide," reports LancasterOnline. "State officials urged continued use of masks and social distancing even as they loosened some rules on crowd sizes at sporting events and other activities. Hospitalizations have recently increased, too, though they remain far below their spring levels."
With 444 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 on Tuesday, the state set a record for most in a day. "This is disappointing news, and sadly it's what can happen when we are experiencing community spread," Gov. Kim Reynolds said Wednesday. "The hospitals are doing what they need to do to manage the numbers they're seeing," she said.
"Our hospitalization rates are surging and beginning to place a strain on our healthcare system (especially staffing)," Utah Lt. Gov Spencer Cox wrote on Twitter Wednesday. "Sadly, we are now seeing increased fatalities. The Wisconsin announcement should be a sobering reminder as Utah isn't far behind in infection rates."
With record high cases and increasing hospitalizations tearing through the state, Gov. Steve Bullock called on local leaders to step up preventative measures. "Local elected leaders have to stand up and say, 'We can do more to get the buy-in.' All the tools are there to limit the spread and transmission. It's up to the locals to enforce their directives," he said. "… It can't all be solved from Helena," the state capital.
"We are trending in the wrong direction, both in new cases and in hospitalizations," Gov. Mark Gordon said. He admitted precautions are a downer but must be followed: "I do know that all of this is very fatiguing, but I have to say that our current scenario is extremely concerning," Gordon said. "Folks, this is a serious call to action."
