This Once Fast-Growing Chain Is Permanently Closing a Third of Its Restaurants

It had recently been named among the "Future 50" fastest-growth restaurant chains.

Restaurant closures are no fun for anyone. Another fast-casual chain has just announced their plans to close a significant number of locations, which will impact office lunch workers, travelers, and plenty of others who loved this destination for its plant-based options and healthy fare.

Restaurant Business reports that Roti is preparing to shut down 14 of its 42 restaurants around the country, with 6 of these closures reportedly in the Chicago area where its headquarters operates. The fast-casual chain has served pitas, bowls, salads, and more that fused a Mediterranean-based menu with some Middle Eastern flare. A lot of fans have found that this lends itself to a nice array of vegetarian and vegan options.

The brand's CEO (who came on board in February 2020 just before the pandemic hit) stated that, without office workers, regular foot traffic, and travelers, it's been tough to sustain the business at its current scale. Roti is currently operating 14 locations in six states and will hopefully open the remaining 14 as business volumes demand post-pandemic.

In 2019, Roti's rapid growth placed the chain on Restaurant Business's list of the "Future 50" national chains. The menu option features loads of colorful veggies, lean proteins, and calorie counts that start at 250 and don't tend to go above 1,000.

Data shows that 90% of Roti customers enjoyed customizing their dishes exactly to their liking, but careful analysis revealed that the buffet of choices has been taxing for employees and sometimes overwhelming for customers—while also wasting valuable time. A new menu strategy will seek to balance Roti's personalized approach with a 50-50 split between customized options and chef-designed staples.

Unfortunately, Roti is certainly not an isolated chain that's suffered at the hands of the current pandemic climate. There's another recently fast-growing burger chain that's close to disappearing.
