Dr. Constance M. Chen, board-certified Plastic Surgeon and Breast Reconstruction Specialist says, "Inner peace gives rise to a radiant smile that shines on those around you like the sun. Everyone will think you are beautiful."
Dr. Chen reminds us to, "Drink lots of water. Avoid sugary drinks. Keeps you hydrated so your skin stays supple and looks alive."
Dr. Melina Jampolis, MD, internist & physician nutrition specialist and podcast host adds, "Sugary drinks include not only sodas but also sweet teas, energy and sports drinks, sugar-filled water, lemonade, and fruity beverages. They are a silent killer that increases weight gain, especially the more dangerous belly fat, while putting you at higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, fatty liver disease, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. Fruit juice that doesn't contain added sugar doesn't fall into this category, although whole and dried fruits are still healthier since they are rich in health-promoting fiber."
Try a Topical Cream
Having a good skincare routine can maintain a youthful appearance and help eliminate dark circles and under eye bags, explains Dr. Elizabeth Hawkes, an oculoplastic surgeon. "Whilst topical creams can help to address some dark circles, it depends on the cause. Topical creams are good for dehydration & allergy relief but they will not restore volume. 'They will not cause the blood vessels under the eyes to constrict, nor will they reverse a family history of dark circles. There is a prescription only treatment that will help reduce the production of melanin in the skin and can be a useful tool in improving the appearance of dark circles, however it has to be used under the guidance of a specialist only."
Remove Makeup Carefully
Dr. Hawkes suggests, "Be careful when removing eye makeup, remember the eyelid skin is very delicate and to remove makeup thoroughly yet carefully. Be careful not to rub the eyes excessively. Makeup wipes can cause more harm than good."
Avoid Chronic Overindulgence
Vicky Larsen, a licensed virtual esthetician and founder of bogl skincare says, "Even with the holidays, it's ok to enjoy some holiday cheer! It's when this way of living becomes a standard that it becomes a problem. Try to limit the amount of alcohol and sugary desserts to just a few every so often so your body has time to flush out the fun in between."
Wear Sunscreen Year Round and Use Good Skincare for Your Skin Type
"Most of the damage to the skin is because we only wear SPF in the summer months," Larsen reminds us. "Free radicals are ever present and therefore SPF is a must! Also, be sure you are using skincare that is made for you and what your skin is going through at this present time. Winter months may require more hydrating products vs. summer months. Seek out a professional to help you out!"
Don't Skip Out on Sleep
Larsen states, "Get plenty of sleep each night. Typically, the average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep, which during this time the body repairs itself. Without enough sleep, under eye bags may form, puffiness may occur and eyes can become bloodshot so be sure to get those zzzz's!"
Use a Self-Tanner
Dr. Enrizza P. Factor, a Clinical Dermatologist and researcher with ThankYouSkin reminds us to, "Apply self-tanner rather than get a tan. Every time you get a tan, you prematurely age your skin. This holds true if you get a tan from the sun, a tanning bed, or other indoor tanning equipment. All emit harmful UV rays that accelerate how quickly your skin ages."
It's Never Too Late to Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Dr, Factor says, "Even people who already have signs of premature skin aging can benefit from making lifestyle changes. By protecting your skin from the sun, you give it a chance to repair some of the damage. Smokers who stop often notice that their skin looks healthier. If signs of aging skin bother you, you may want to see a dermatologist. New treatments and less-invasive procedures for smoothing wrinkles, tightening skin, and improving one's complexion are giving many people younger-looking skin."
