Dr. Fauci Just Issued This New COVID Warning
The coronavirus pandemic is not over. Cases and deaths are going up again in some states, like Michigan, and plateauing countrywide. It's a race, say experts, between the virus, the variants and the vaccines. Thus, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, issued a warning last night, appearing on CNN with Chris Cuomo. His takeaways could save your life. Read on for his essential advice—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Signs Your Illness is Actually Coronavirus in Disguise.
Dr. Fauci Said "We Really Have to Be Careful"
Dr. Fauci said now is not the time to act like the pandemic is over. "We really have to be careful," said Dr. Fauci, "as I mentioned…multiple times, we've come down to a level that plateaued and is not continuing to go down and we're right up to around 60,000 new infections per day, which puts you at considerable risk of rebounding up,—essentially what they're seeing in Europe, you know." In certain European countries, cases are exploding; France just issued another lockdown.
Dr. Fauci Said Don't Declare "Premature Victory"
"With the vaccines coming in now where we're vaccinating about 3 million people a day, every day that goes by, we get closer and closer to a greater degree of protection. So now is just not the time to pull back and declare premature victory—it is just not the time."
Dr. Fauci Brought Up Our Previous Surges
"We are still right now, as you know from the last few days of the press conferences that we've given at the White House, at a crucial point in the pandemic where we are seeing a plateauing and now even an increasing in cases, which is very disconcerting," Fauci said, speaking, in honor of National Farmworker Awareness Week, with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus at their virtual discussion on protecting Farmworkers from COVID-19. "We had a major peak following the holiday season of Christmas and new year's and through January and early February. Then we had a precipitous drop downward, but now we've plateaued at anywhere between 50,000 and 65,000 cases a day, which is really very precarious."
Dr. Fauci Called the Next Few Weeks "Critical"
At the virtual discussion, Fauci also pointed out that what happens in the coming weeks will determine the trajectory of the pandemic. "The next few weeks are going to be a very critical part because we're seeing this potential surge of infections at the same time as we're vaccinating more and more people," he said. "It's going to be almost a race between getting people vaccinated versus avoiding a surge of new cases."
Dr. Fauci Defended His Record Under Trump
After speaking out in a CNN special about life working with Donald Trump, both Fauci and Deborah Birx found themselves in the crosshairs of the former President, who called Fauci a flip-flopper. Host Cuomo asked Fauci, who defended Birx, if there was more he could have done last year, like, say, call Trump a liar. "No, I don't think you could just come out and say, this guy's lying," said Dr. Fauci. "I don't know how good that would have been, but I certainly clashed with the president. We had a considerable amount of stress and tension between us when I spoke out against him with hydroxychloroquine, when he said that 'this is going to end tomorrow, it's going to go away.' And I said, no, it's not just going to go away. There were a lot of things that we did that was contradictory to him, which obviously caused a lot of stress and strain, but I just want to put that behind those and look ahead." So look ahead: get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
