CDC Just Warned "Cases are High" in These States
The CDC just issued a warning: "COVID-19 cases are high in parts of the country with low vaccination coverage, especially" in areas where "less than 40% of the people are vaccinated & there are more than 100 cases for every 100,000 people." So where is that? More places than you'd think. Their map indicates large swaths of this country are still dangerous, especially if you're unvaccinated. Read on to see your neighborhood is on the list—to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You Have "Long" COVID and May Not Even Know It.
Florida has been the epicenter of this "fourth wave," and Louisiana was hammered (along with Hurricane Ida), but cases are plateauing, experts hope; now Georgia is the "most red" on the CDC's map, with only 41.2% of the population fully vaccinated (compare that to New York's 60%). It's not just bad if you get COVID; overall, emergency services are overwhelmed, so if you live there, be careful. "As coronavirus cases continue to surge statewide, Georgia hospitals are, at times, declaring themselves on diversion," reports the Ledger Enquirer. "If a hospital declares itself as 'on diversion,' patients will likely be taken to another hospital for treatment, assuming they have the resources to take the patient." That's a dangerous assumption. Get vaccinated.
The outbreaks in Missouri and Illinois don't just affect those old enough to refuse vaccination for themselves; it hurts those who can't get one because they are too young and sitting prey. "Hospitals in the South and Midwest say they are treating more children with Covid-19 than ever and are preparing for worse surges to come," reports the Wall Street Journal. "Cases there have jumped over the past six weeks as the highly contagious Delta variant spreads primarily among unvaccinated people. That is leading to more sick kids in places where community spread of the variant is high, public-health experts say." Get vaccinated.
Washington and Oregon have gotten slammed by a rises in cases. They aren't alone. Just look at Idaho. "Idaho Gov. Brad Little on Tuesday called in 220 medical workers available through federal programs and mobilized 150 Idaho National Guard soldiers to deal with a surge in unvaccinated COVID-19 patients that is overwhelming the state's hospitals," the AP just reported. "The Republican governor during a remotely held announcement said the moves are a last-ditch effort to avoid activating for the first time statewide crisis standards of care that could force medical professionals to decide who lives and who dies. The last week has seen about 1,000 newly confirmed coronavirus cases per day, most of them unvaccinated. The number of intensive care unit beds has been well under 100 during that time, and Little said only four were available on Tuesday in the entire state." Get vaccinated.
CDC Warns Unvaccinated People to Not Travel
"Given where we are with disease transmission right now, we would say that people need to take their own these risks into their own consideration as they think about traveling," CDC director Rochelle Walensky said during a White House Covid briefing Tuesday. "If you are unvaccinated, we would recommend not traveling" she said, adding that those who are vaccinated should wear masks when travelling. "Throughout the pandemic, we have seen that the vast majority of transmission takes place among unvaccinated people in closed indoor settings," Walensky said. "Masks are not forever, but they are for now."
How to Stay Safe Out There
Follow the public fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—get vaccinated ASAP; if you live in an area with low vaccination rates, wear an N95 face mask, don't travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
