This Restaurant Chain Is Closing Following Food Sourcing Scandal
The restaurant industry is a notoriously difficult one to make a living in. Customers can be fickle, profit margins are frequently razor thin, and a single bad review can lead to a sudden backlash against even the most popular eateries.
Unfortunately, one restaurant chain is experiencing just how tough the business can be, choosing to close all of its locations following a highly publicized scandal. Read on to find out which eatery is closing its doors for good. And for more restaurants you'll never patronize again, check out The Saddest Restaurant Closures In Your State.
Belcampo is closing its restaurants and stores.
On Oct. 19, the Los Angeles Times reported that Belcampo, a restaurant and retail chain specializing in sustainable and organic meat, had closed all of its locations.
The chain, which operated five businesses—three in the Los Angeles area and two in Northern California—will no longer sell or serve food at any of its locations, CEO Garry Embleton confirmed in a statement; the chain's farm and processing facilities remain operational.
The company was rocked by a food sourcing scandal earlier this year.
In May 2021, a former Belcampo employee posted a video alleging that Belcampo was not as transparent about the sourcing of its meats as it claimed to be.
Specifically, the employee claimed that Belcampo would purchase conventionally raised meat from other farms, label it "organic," and sell it at a significantly higher price to customers.
The company confirmed the issue in a statement.
Following the allegations made by its former employee, Belcampo confirmed that some of its products failed to meet the chain's standards.
"Overall, externally sourced meats which did not meet Belcampo quality standards represented <6% of the total value of all meats procured from the beginning of 2020 to the end of May 2021," the company said in a statement. "We apologize to our customers. Our single highest priority as a company is to take responsibility for the situation, ensure it never happens again and regain our customers' trust."
Some operations may continue under a different name.
While Belcampo may be shuttering its retail and foodservice operations, the company may not be going under completely.
Embleton revealed that the company would be looking into "a range of options" regarding its future, which could include further retail sales under a different name, although nothing has yet been set in stone.
