Why You Should Never Order the Filet-O-Fish at McDonald's
McDonald's might be known for its Big Mac and famous French fries people are constantly ordering, but have you ever thought about the menu item that you'd want to avoid at the fast food giant? According to Reddit, this food item isn't nearly as popular as Mickey D's more iconic orders, so it may sit in a warming area until you order it. Doesn't sound too appetizing, does it?

What was the reason why?
One user on Reddit said it all, "It's been three years since I worked there but I can promise you that Filet-O-Fish is not fresh by any stretch of the imagination." Yikes.
Another user also said, "At McDonald's just say you want a fish filet cooked to order. It will take ~5 more minutes but worth it compared to the filet that has been in the heated cabinet for hours."
Ordering a fish filet that's been sitting in a hot cabinet for a while? We'll pass and ask for a fresh filet. Noted!
Another Reddit user shared what they experienced once at the Golden Arches: "That Filet o Fish sandwich is the reason I don't even eat at McDonald's anymore. I ordered it and saw the manager grab one that was in the warmer to be served and pop [it] in the microwave and serve it to me."
The Filet-O-Fish is certainly not the most popular sandwich at McDonald's, as you can imagine. With the longstanding Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder with Cheese reigning supreme on the menu board, it's no wonder the fish alternative doesn't receive as much attention. Plus, how often do you look to order seafood when you're at a fast food restaurant known for its burgers? Not often, right? You'd probably go to Long John Silver's instead.
A McDonald's spokesperson commented to the Sun Online, "While we always strive to freshly prepare orders, for customer convenience, there are times—such as during peak hours—when we prepare some ingredients in advance."
It makes sense why the Filet-O-Fish doesn't seem to be made as often as the burgers, but at the same time, maybe less of them can be prepared at the beginning of the day so that they're not just sitting in a hot cabinet for hours on end? Just our thought.
Why even sell the Filet-O-Fish if it's not as popular?
The story behind the Filet-O-Fish itself is fascinating. It was created in an attempt to keep sales up during Lent, which is the 40-day period that occurs between Ash Wednesday and Easter. It's quite typical for Catholics who participate in this religious observance to give up meat on Fridays. As a result, the Filet-O-Fish was the McDonald's answer, and it is a hit during this time of year. In 2016, McDonald's even said that 25 percent of all Fish-O-Filet sandwiches are sold during Lent.
So if you have a hankering for the sandwich, just make sure to request the sandwich be cooked to order as that Reddit user suggested!
