McDonald's Just Announced This Major New Menu Addition for September

Things are about to get a whole lot spicier at the iconic fast-food chain!

If you're the kind of person that really enjoys hot and peppery flavored food, then it's time to celebrate, because McDonald's menu just got way spicier. For the first time since introducing Chicken McNuggets in 1983, their iconic dish will soon come with a spicy option.

The fast-food giant just announced some new menu innovations set to arrive at U.S. restaurants this fall, aiming to please "spice-seeking customers." Spicy Chicken McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce will be available on September 16, for a limited time, at participating restaurants nationwide, according to a statement released by the brand on August 25.

McDonald's explains how the new spicy McNuggets get their heat from a tempura coating "made of both cayenne and chili peppers." And for those seeking an even hotter version, you can use the new Mighty Hot Sauce, made from a "blend of crushed red peppers and spicy chilis." The unique dipping sauce is not just McDonald's first new sauce introduced since 2017, but it is the hottest one available so far.

McDonald's is jumping on the spicy chicken trend that started a few years ago when KFC introduced their Nashville Hot Chicken option—and, of course, you can't forget the Popeye's chicken sandwich craze of 2019 (of which the spicy option was a definite fan favorite!).

"This is the first time we've introduced a new flavor of our classic Chicken McNuggets in the U.S. since they came to menus in 1983," said Vice President of Menu Innovation, Linda VanGosen. "As our customers have been asking for Spicy McNuggets for some time now, we couldn't think of a better time to bring them to our menus. We can't wait for McNuggets fans to get a taste of these new spicy options." (Related: What McDonald's Served the Year You Were Born.)

It's not just the spicy McNuggets that will be new to the menu mid-September. McDonald's is also offering a new Chips Ahoy! flavored McFlurry, made with blended vanilla soft-serve, caramel topping, and cookie pieces. Something to cool down with after the spicy McNugget experience, perhaps?

McDonald's has long been the most popular option for consumers looking for a quick meal. Convenience, affordability, and consistency get the most play, but as we can see with this menu development, the fast-food giant is unafraid to innovate and keep things fresh with regular additions.
