McDonald's Is Testing Two New Crispy Chicken Sandwiches
If you've been to McDonald's recently, you may have spotted something particular about its menu: It's missing a trendy chicken sandwich.
In case you haven't noticed, 2019 has been the Year of the Chicken Sandwich. Popeyes set social media on fire with its chicken sandwich, then it sold out across the nation—twice. Taco Bell is currently testing chicken strips for the first time, too—reportedly as a direct competition to Popeyes' success. And mainstay Chick-fil-A, with its signature chicken sandwich, has been growing steadily year over year, adding about 1,000 stores in 2019 alone.
So it's curious, to say the least, that McDonald's, the most recognizable fast-food chain in America, hasn't officially entered the fray.
Well, that has changed.
In a move to update both their look and menu, McDonald's recently teased a no-beef offering in a December 1st, 2019, tweet:
Then, when a curious customer inquired, they confirmed: two brand-new Southern-style chicken sandwiches are indeed on the way:
These two new chicken sandwich options definitely refresh the fast-food chain's current offerings. According to the tweet, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich comes with butter and crinkle-cut dill pickles, while the Deluxe Chicken Sandwich features fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and a spread of mayo. Both are served on a buttery potato roll.
According to CNN, the sandwiches are being tested between now and January 26th, 2020, in two markets: Knoxville, Tennessee, and Houston, Texas. If they succeed, keep an eye out at your local McDonald's so you can try them for yourself.
The announcement of these two new chicken sandwiches follows in the footsteps of a failed September launch when McDonald's tested a spicy barbecue chicken sandwich. According to a Business Insider report, it totally flopped.
The launch anticipates a growing company concern over the brand's image of their chicken line. As reported by CNBC, in July 2019, the National Owners Association, a group of McDonald's franchisees, wrote an official letter calling for the introduction of a higher-tier chicken sandwich, like what a customer may find at Chick-fil-A or Popeyes.
"We have great Chicken McNuggets and our McChicken is a very good product. But we do not compete in the premium chicken sandwich category, either grilled or crispy," the board wrote. "A chicken sandwich at McDonald's should be our top priority."
Time will tell if the two new chicken sandwiches will become available nationwide, but we're hoping they come to a McDonald's near us!
