What Was Dr. Fauci's Warning?
On Thursday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and key member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, joined Yahoo News Editor in Chief Daniel Klaidman and Chief Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff to discuss all things coronavirus. During the engaging talk he revealed the startling truth that many people are becoming unknowingly infected—as well as infecting others—during small gatherings with friends and family.
"When you see what's going on right now, you see pictures of people congregating in places in bars, people go to different functions," he said.
The issue is that when these people return home or spend time with their loved ones, they don't realize they are sick and then spread the virus to them as well.
"Because there's so much community spread, that even in simple family settings where you have four, six, or eight people gathering at a dinner, because of the fact that there's so much community spread people, don't appreciate that they may be infected and have no symptoms, and then spread it within the family," he revealed.
Follow Fauci's Fundamentals
During the talk he re-emphasized the importance of following the fundamentals: "Uniform wearing of masks, keeping physical distance, at least six feet where possible, avoiding congregate settings and crowds, doing things outdoors much more preferentially than indoor and washing hands frequently," he said.
During an interview on Wednesday with CBS anchor Norah O'Donnell, Dr. Fauci offered two easy but actionable ways you can avoid catching COVID at home. The first involves ventilation. "You may need to expand a little bit more heat energy to keep your house warm, but try and keep windows open, try and keep things well ventilated," he suggested. The second? Mask up at home when others are around. "Don't be afraid to wear a mask in your house if you're not certain the persons that are in the house are negative," he said.
