Fauci Just Told Congress We Made These COVID-19 Mistakes

The nation’s leading U.S. infectious disease expert spoke at a hearing.

As COVID-19 continues to ravage the world, no country is feeling the wrath of the highly infectious virus such as the United States. According to the latest statistics, more people have died from the highly infectious virus in the United States than anywhere else in the world, with the domestic death toll topping 150,000 on Wednesday. During his Friday testimony before a coronavirus subcommittee in Congress, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading U.S. infectious disease expert and key member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, made quite a few revelations about the pandemic—addressing everything from potential vaccinations to recommended prevention methods. Click through to see what he said, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these 21 Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.

On Where It's Safest

"It's always better being outdoors than indoors [when it comes to being around other people]. We should avoid crowds under any circumstances but wearing a mask is the critical issue."

On Whether Children are Immune

"Children do get infected," Fauci said. "They are not immune. When children get infected, they generally do much much better. If you look at hospitalizations, their rate is much better."

On Mistakes States Made Reopening

"In the attempt to reopen in some situations states did not abide strictly by the guidelines that the task force and the White House has put out. And others that even did abide by it, the people in the state actually were congregating in crowds and not wearing masks," he said. "I think there was such a diversity of response in this country from different states that we really did not have a unified bringing everything down," he said.

On Whether More Tests is Why We Have Rising Cases

"I stand by my previous statement that the increase in cases was due to a number of factors and one was that in the attempt to reopen that in some situations states did not abroad strictly by the guidelines that the task force and the White House had put out and others that even did abide by it, the people in the state actually were congregating in crowds and not wearing masks," Fauci said.

On How to Stay Protected Despite Testing Lags

"If a person goes in for a test they should assume it is going to be positive and isolate themselves," Dr. Fauci stated.

On the Efficacy of Hydroxychloroquine

"Any and all of the randomized placebo-controlled trials, none of them have shown any efficacy of hydroxychloroquine," Fauci explained. However, he did add that if any placebo-controlled trials did show that the drug could help coronavirus patients, he would adjust his opinion accordingly.

On Why Europe Did it Better

"If you look at what happened in Europe, when they shut down or locked down or went to shelter in place — however you want to describe it — they really did it to the tune of about 95% plus of the country did that," Fauci said. However, "when you actually look at what we did, even though we shut down, even though it created a great deal of difficulty, we really functionally shut down only about 50% in the sense of the totality of the country," Fauci added.

On When We Could Have a Vaccine

"We hope that by the time we get into late fall and early winter, we will have in fact a vaccine that we can say that would be safe and effective. One can never guarantee the safety or effectiveness unless you do the trial, but we are cautiously optimistic this will be successful," Fauci said. "Because in the early studies with humans, the phase one study, it clearly showed that individuals who are vaccinated mounted a neutralizing antibody response that was at least comparable and in many respects better than what we see in convalescent serum from individuals who have recovered from Covid-19," Fauci added. On Whether Protests Should be Limited
