This is Now the Fastest Way to Check if a Restaurant is Safe

A restaurant safety checklist is now at your fingertips, thanks to Yelp.

If you're riddled with anxiety about the post-pandemic reopenings in your town, and wondering how to best make decisions for your own health, you can breathe a sigh of relief—all the safety information from your local businesses is now right at your fingertips.

In a blog post this week, the consumer ratings aggregator site Yelp announced they have added cleanliness and coronavirus precaution indicators to their business pages. While safety guidelines and restrictions greatly vary from one state, and even county, to another, the site is taking matters into their own hands to provide a crucial link in communication between businesses and customers on coronavirus safety.

The new feature will appear on each business page on Yelp in a section titled "COVID-19 Updates" and provide you with an at-a-glance rundown of what specific measures the business is taking to protect its customers from coronavirus.

If you're curious whether your favorite restaurant is operating at limited capacity, or enforcing face coverings on premises, you'll be able to quickly scan the new checklist and find out. The safety measures will be self-reported by businesses, but Yelp is relying on customer feedback to confirm or deny the businesses are actually taking the steps outlined on their page. You'll find out if the business is:

  • Enforcing social distancing
  • Sanitizing between customers
  • Mandating staff to wear masks and/or gloves
  • Providing hand sanitizer
  • Operating at limited capacity
  • Providing contactless payment methods
  • Checking customers' temperatures
  • Requiring customers to wear masks

Yelp has created the checklist based on a their own consumer survey, which showed these factors to be of specific concern in order for customers to feel safe and more likely to visit a local business. The section will be complete with a time stamp showing when the information was last updated, as well as a COVID banner on top of each business page where owners can write and update a customized message.

Another feature Yelp is upgrading is the Waitlist feature, where businesses will now be able to print their own QR codes which customers can easily scan to add themselves to the waiting list for tables. Along with contactless payment methods, this feature cuts down on in-person communication with your host.
