Dr. Fauci Warns These States About COVID Outbreak
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease authority, puts it bluntly when it comes to the pandemic: We're in "a whole lot of trouble." The country's baseline of infections is still too high, and portends rising deaths. During an appearance on The News with Shepard Smith, Dr. Fauci named one state specifically—Iowa—and added, "if you look at the states of the country, the Midwest, the Northwest, instead of seeing it go in the other direction down, we're seeing an increase in test positivity." Read on to see which states are seeing surging numbers, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.
Iowa Has Record High Hospitalizations
Trump is campaigning in Iowa today and his "Iowa stop is the most audacious move, particularly after Trump himself was hospitalized roughly one week ago with Covid-19," reports Stat News. "The state is experiencing record high hospitalizations, with 463 reported on Monday alone. Iowa's statewide positive rate is up 9.5% over the last two weeks, according to STAT's Covid-19 Tracker. Public health officials are struggling to contain the outbreak; Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has refused to implement a number of public health best practices that are meant to contain the spread."
Wisconsin is Running Out of Hospital Beds
Wisconsin has to open a field hospital to take care of patient overflow. "We hoped this day wouldn't come, but unfortunately, Wisconsin is in a much different, more dire place today and our healthcare systems are beginning to become overwhelmed by the surge of COVID-19 cases," Democratic Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement. "State-level data showed a surge in cases among younger people, including Wisconsin, where nearly a quarter of the state's more than 150,000 cases involved adults between the ages of 20 and 29, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services," reports the Wall Street Journal.
Indiana Has Been Breaking Case Records
"After three straight days of record-breaking COVID-19 numbers in Indiana, the state saw a slight dip in cases on Sunday with 1,579 new cases, which is still the third-highest daily total since the start of the pandemic," according to WTHR. "This new spike in cases has made the virus more of a reality for Hoosiers who either tested positive for COVID-19 or know someone who has." "In March and April, it didn't seem real at first because I didn't know anyone who had it," Natalia Dickerson, a high school senior, told the station.
Illinois Businesses are Disregarding Mitigation Measures
"Like many Midwestern states, Illinois has struggled with rising coronavirus cases and death counts recently, surpassing 300,000 confirmed cases this month and recording its highest daily death count since late June on Friday," reports USA Today. "Public health officials issued a 'warning list' for 28 Illinois counties at risk for coronavirus surges and blamed, in part, businesses who were 'blatantly disregarding mitigation measures, people not social distancing, gathering in large groups and not using face coverings.'"
Ohio's Governor Pleads With His Citizens to Be Cautious
"Hitting a grim pandemic milestone, Ohio surpassed 5,000 deaths from the new coronavirus, a pathogen that emerged in humans only late last year and now is a leading killer in the Buckeye State and the nation," reports Cincinnati.com. "We're sick of wearing masks, we're sick of all of this, and I get it, but we've got to hang in there for our kids. We've got to hang in there for ourselves," Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, said. "The best way to summarize it, I think, is that people are simply not being cautious," the governor said. "They're going about their family life and meeting with people."
