Dr. Fauci Just Announced 5 Rules Every American Should Follow

Flattening the curve and saving lives boils down to a few simple actions we can all take.

As coronavirus infections, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to climb across the country, many people want to know what they can do to stop the spread of the devastating virus that has already infected almost four million Americans. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, if every one of us followed five "fundamentals," we could collectively flatten the COVID-19 curves and save lives. In an interview with Maria Shriver, the nation's leading infectious disease expert said if all of us do these things, "we could turn around what's going on right now," he promises. Click through to see what they are.

Wear a Mask

Wear a mask and "wear it universally," orders Dr. Fauci. "Sometimes it's impossible to always stay six feet from someone," he points out. "That's the reason why you wear a mask at all times."

Stop Congregating Indoors—Especially in Bars

Indoor congregation should be avoided. "You know, it's just not a good idea," he points out. As for watering holes, which have been linked to a number of large coronavirus outbreaks across the country, he takes it a step further. "We should close the bars until we get this under control," he asserts.

Continue Social Distancing—and Avoid Crowds

"Physical distancing is one of the most important things in addition and complementary to a mask," Fauci points out. "So when you're out, you can do many things and still maintain a six-foot physical distance."

Limit Indoor Seating in Restaurants

When it comes to dining, Dr. Fauci maintains that restaurants can not be operating at full capacity. "When you have restaurants, limit the seating of indoor restaurants," he says. He also emphasizes that "outdoor [dining] is always better than indoor."

Prioritize Personal Hygiene

And last, but not least, don't forget about personal hygiene. "Just wash your hands," Fauci orders. Read on for one last piece of advice.

Fauci Says Don't Give Up

Fauci also discussed the "quite serious" and "difficult situation" going on in certain parts of the country, including Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, "where the surges have been significant and have actually led to a record amount of cases on a daily basis." However, he warns that the biggest mistake we can make is to give up. "The thing I don't want people to think, that we should just throw our hands up and say, it's [a] funeral," he pointed out. "There is a pathway."

The pathway, he explains, boils down to what he calls "fundamentals," the things you just read about, the things "we know from experience in our own country, as well as experience in other countries" that can stop surges and help get us down to baseline.
