Dr. Fauci Predicts COVID-19 Cases May Hit This "Very Disturbing" High
The number of new daily coronavirus infections continues to increase, and according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of NIAID and one of the leading forces on the Coronavirus Task Force, the number is going to continue increasing at a disturbing rate. During his Tuesday testimony in front of the Senate, Elizabeth Warren asked him if his early estimates surrounding coronavirus infections and deaths had been modified, due to the fact that we are already well into the 100,000 to 200,000 range of deaths due to the virus—and what he had to say was alarming scary.
"I can't make an accurate prediction but it is going to be very disturbing," Dr. Fauci admitted. "The entire country is at risk."
Could Go Up to 100,000 Cases a Day
While he couldn't offer an exact figure, due to the fact that it could require a scientific model, he believes that if things continue trending the way they are, we can expect the number of daily cases to more than double.
"We are having 40k new cases a day. I would not be surprised if it went up to 100k per day," he stated. "I am very concerned because it could get very bad."
While he is "cautiously optimistic" there will be a "safe and effective vaccine" available in early 2021, he admits "there is no guarantee."
That being said, Dr. Fauci made it very clear that our prevention approach shouldn't be "all or nothing," and that socializing shouldn't be off the table. "Outdoors is better than indoors," he pointed out when Senator Mitt Romney asked him about the safest scenarios.
Early in the pandemic, Dr. Fauci estimated the total overall death toll as a result of the virus to be around 100,000 to 200,000. Then, in April, as numbers started dropping, he claimed the number could be closer to 60,000. Currently, the United States has reported over 2.6 million coronavirus cases and 128,000 fatalities linked to it—and the year isn't even over. And, according to antibody studies, it is possible that ten times as many have already been infected—so closer to 20 million.
Throughout the hearing, Dr. Fauci reiterated time and again that the only way infections will decrease is if people follow the guidelines set forth by the CDC. "We recommend masks…you should avoid crowds…And when you're outside and do not have the capability for maintaining distance, you should wear a mask at all times," he reminded. So wear your face mask, social distance, wash your hands frequently monitor your health, don't leave home unless it's essential and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Things You Should Never Do During the Coronavirus Pandemic.
