You Won't Believe How Much Sugar is in Chili's New $5 Margaritas

Here's how you should vote to spend your calories instead.

Available from now until Election Day for only $5, the Chili's Presidente Margarita is likely to win the popular vote in the final countdown to Nov. 3. For less than a tank of gas, you can peacefully sip on Sauza Conmemorativo Tequila, Patrón Citrónge, and E&J Brandy instead of worry about the results. While the chain restaurant boasts that each cocktail is hand-shaken 25 times, it doesn't campaign on the amount of sugar and sodium in every glass.

The OG Chili's margarita has 240 calories, 24 grams of carbs, 20 grams of sugar, and a whopping 1,020 milligrams of sodium. To put the latter into perspective, that's almost half of the American Heart Association's recommended 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Though not included in the promotion, the mango and strawberry versions of the Presidente don't contain any sodium. But they do have significantly more carbs—34 grams each—and sugar than their classic cousin. With 30 grams, the mango is the front-runner for sweetest beverage. It's won't win in a landslide, though. One strawberry Presidente margarita has 29 grams of sugar. (Both candidates nearly hit the daily recommended limit of 36 grams per day.)

When you order the $5 Presidente margarita, you'll score a commemorative Chili's "I voted" sticker. Because it's a democracy, how you vote to spend your calories is ultimately in your own hands. The Fresh for $5 Raspberry Margarita has no sodium and the least amount of sugar—17 grams—but it's not in the race this election cycle.
